Carmel, California – Monterey Area Architectural Resources Archive (MAARA) and the American Institute of Architects Monterey Bay (AIA Monterey Bay) announces Frank Lloyd Wright’s Walker House, an illustrated lecture by Kathryn Smith, noted national Wright expert, October 19, 2023, 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Carpenter Hall, Sunset Center, San Carlos Street at 9th Avenue, Carmel. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Della Walker House has been a subject of mystery, facing the Bay, at the end of Carmel Beach. Very few have been inside the gates, no less inside the rooms. In 2023, Kathryn Smith authored a lavishly illustrated publication, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Walker House, which answers all the questions: from who the client was, what did it cost, who designed all the furniture, and more. In the lecture, she presents original drawings, historic photographs, summaries of the architect-client correspondence, and ends with a tour of the interior in new color images made specifically for this publication. Pierluigi Serraino, Bay Area architectural critic, described Smith’s Walker House as “a revelation, answers questions we never even thought to ask, with more photos we never knew existed.” Smith explained, “I am eager to present this new information in Carmel-by-the-Sea, where it will be most welcomed and appreciated.” The lecture is co-sponsored by the American Institute of Architects Monterey Bay (AIA Monterey Bay) and Monterey Area Architectural Resources Archive (MAARA). A book sale and signing follows immediately after the lecture. Admission is $10 for members of sponsoring organizations, $20 for the public, tickets only available at the door. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Parking lot and street parking available.
